Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) occurs when stomach contents repeatedly reflux into the oesophagus and cause troublesome symptoms or complications. Many people are managed without surgery, but specialist assessment can be useful when symptoms persist, the diagnosis is uncertain or a hiatus hernia is involved.
Assessment
Assessment may include review of symptoms and medication, gastroscopy and, in selected patients, further tests of reflux or oesophageal function. The purpose is to confirm the problem before considering an intervention.
When surgery may be considered
Anti-reflux surgery or repair of a hiatus hernia can be appropriate for selected patients. The decision depends on the diagnosis, symptom pattern, anatomy, response to medication and the balance of risks and benefits for the individual patient.
If you take long-term acid-suppressing medication, do not stop it without discussing the plan with your doctor. Some patients have clear indications for ongoing treatment and others may be suitable for review or dose reduction.
