Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the common operation used to remove the gallbladder when gallstones or gallbladder disease are causing significant symptoms or complications.

Why gallbladder surgery may be recommended

Surgery may be considered for recurrent gallstone pain, inflammation of the gallbladder or complications related to gallstones. The decision depends on symptoms, imaging, general health and whether there are stones or other problems affecting the bile ducts.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Most gallbladder removal is performed through several small abdominal incisions using a camera and specialised instruments. In some circumstances an open operation may be safer or necessary.

Bile duct stones

When stones are suspected in the common bile duct, additional imaging or an endoscopic procedure such as ERCP may be required before, during or after gallbladder surgery depending on the clinical situation.
