Gastroscopy and colonoscopy allow the lining of the gastrointestinal tract to be examined directly using a flexible endoscope. They may be used for diagnosis, surveillance and selected treatments.

Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small bowel. It can help investigate upper gastrointestinal symptoms and allows biopsies or other small interventions to be performed when appropriate.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy examines the large bowel. It can be used to investigate symptoms, perform surveillance and identify or remove selected polyps and other abnormalities.

Preparing for endoscopy

Your endoscopy team will provide procedure-specific instructions about fasting, bowel preparation where required, medications, transport home and what to expect after the procedure. Follow those individual instructions rather than relying on general website information.
