Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialised endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and, more importantly, treat selected problems affecting the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts.

What ERCP may be used for

ERCP may be considered when there is a suspected or confirmed blockage, stone, narrowing or other problem involving the bile ducts or pancreatic ducts. Whether it is appropriate depends on imaging, symptoms and the underlying condition.

How the procedure is performed

A flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth to the first part of the small bowel, where the bile duct opens. Specialised instruments can then be used to access the duct system and perform treatment when required.
